Mac Itunes Library Location

If you’re old school and still prefer to backup your iOS devices through iTunes, it’d be handy to know where those backups are located. Follow along to learn where iTunes stores its backups.

Where does iTunes store backups?

On a Mac

When you install iTunes for Windows, by default the Library location is in your local My Music folder. If you want to save space on your hard drive, change the location to an external or network. Where does iTunes store backups? Open a Finder window. Click on Go Go To Folder. Type in the following command: /Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/.

  1. Open a Finder window.
  2. Click on Go > Go To Folder.
  3. Type in the following command: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/

Within there you’ll find your iPhone and iPad backups backed up through iTunes, scrambled with a long string of letters and numbers.

You can optionally fire up iTunes, open preferences (iTunes > Preferences or ⌘ + ,), click on Devices, right-click your device and click Show in Finder. You can match the backup you see in Finder with the one in iTunes by looking at the date and time the backup was completed and when the folder was modified.

On Windows

On Windows it’s slightly more complicated based on which version of Windows you’re running.

For Windows XP, navigate to: Documents and Settings(username)Application DataApple ComputerMobileSyncBackup

And for users running Windows 7, 8, or 10: Users(username)AppDataRoamingApple ComputerMobileSyncBackup

From here you can manually delete backups to save space on your hard drive, or copy them to an external hard drive to have a backup of your backup.

When you install iTunes for Windows, by default the Library location is in your local My Music folder. If you want to save space on your hard drive, change the location to an external or network drive.

From the menu bar click Edit >> Preferences.

On a Mac, go to iTunes >> Preferences.

The Preferences window comes up. Click the Advanced icon and next to the iTunes Media Folder Location field click Change.

Now select the location you want to make the new library location. Here I’m selecting the music folder from my home server. But you can select any location you want.

Now any media I buy from the iTunes store will be places in the network location. I also need to copy all of my songs over to iTunes. To do this, open the music directory, hit [Ctrl][A] on the keyboard to highlight all music folders. Then drag them to iTunes.

Now wait while your songs copy over.

Success. Now the iTunes music library has been transferred from the new location.

If you have a lot of music in your collection, changing the library location to an external or network drive, saves a lot of space on your local drive.
